Tailings & Mine Waste Management

Managing mine waste and mill tailings in an innovative, sustainable manner. There is no doubt that the minerals produced through mining have been providing the basics for human civilization. However, the legacy of the 20th century has been the production of billions of tonnes of mine waste and mill tailings. The mass mining concept as a viable approach for the foreseeable future is producing greater amounts of waste and mill tailings. This conference seeks to discuss alternatives to managing this in a more sustainable manner.

  • Site selection and permitting issues arise at the onset of any major tailings storage facility study. Detailed assessment of foundation conditions, land use patterns, seismic risk and hydrology can result in significant capital,
  • Slurry disposal to a series of cells with tailings deposition cycled between the cells to facilitate consolidation and desiccation
  • Central thickened discharge on relatively flat ground, with supernatant water collected behind a water-retaining perimeter containment wall or in a water-tight perimeter channel
  • Slurry disposal to a ring containment wall on relatively flat ground with a centrally-located decant facility
  • Down valley discharge of thickened tailings towards a containment wall, located at the head of a catchment
  • Slurry disposal to a valley storage — involving tailings discharge downstream towards a water retaining containment with supernatant decant or upstream away from the containment wall with a decant facility located at the upstream end
